1: Reasons to consider in adopting the Low 72-54-36 Cut

»» The Low 72-54-36 cut works as follows -- if a player completes at least 36 holes of play
without a withdrawal or disqualification -AND- if after 36 holes they are among the Low
72 scorers and ties, then they are assured of earning official money and Fed Ex points,
no matter if they play only 36 holes (Low 72 and ties after 36 holes), or 54 holes (Low 54
and ties after 36 holes), or the full 72 holes (Low 36 and ties after 54 holes).
Detailed description of Low 72-54-36 cut

»» Of course, the Low 72-54-36 cut would deny some players the opportunity to improve
upon their standing in any given tournament beyond 36 or 54 holes.   Even so, such
players would still be officially earning both money and points with the Low 72-54-36
cut, instead of earning nothing under the current cut rules.

»» An example of how the Low 72-54-36 cut can reduce weekend field loads in a much better
fashion than by the current Low 65 and ties method -- Let us say that with the Low 65 and
ties cut, 88 players qualify for the final 36 holes, and there are 24 players tied for 65th
place! The Low 72-54-36 cut resolves a scenario such as this by limiting the 24 players
tied for 65th to only 36 holes of play, but at the same time those 24 players still receive
official finish credit, plus appropriate official money and Fed Ex points.

»» The reduction of the post 36 and 54 hole fields would allow for more flexible 3rd and 4th
round tee times. In the case of the 4th round, the 36-or-more qualifying players would
have the luxury of any of these -- first group out tees off an hour or more later in the
morning; intervals between groups of two can be spaced at nine, ten or eleven minutes.
There can even be an interval of 20 minutes (more or less) between the early and late
starting groups of the 4th round field.

»» The final 4th round group can tee off as early as 1:20 pm (Eastern Time). Assuming that
the last group finishes regulation play within four hours, plus perhaps a few minutes
more, then it is quite likely that the last putt could be made well before 6:00 pm (Eastern
Time), barring the occurance of a tie which would of course necessitate a playoff.

»» Earlier 4th round finishes, even those where a playoff might occur, would allow for the
coverage of the particular tournament to be completed well before the start of Sunday
prime time TV programs at 7:00 pm, U.S. Eastern Time. It has been quite common in
recent years for a tournament to continue past 7:00 pm, with a switch-over from the
original presenting network to the Golf Channel.

With a smaller final round field, and more favorable tee times, tournaments stand a
much better chance of being completed (barring a playoff) before 6:00 pm or 7:00 pm
(Eastern Time) on Sunday evenings.

Actual PGA Tour 36-hole cut method .... Low 65 players and ties

Proposed alternative 36-hole cut method ... First: Low-72 and ties    Second: Low-54 and ties

All players who successfully qualify for Low-72 status are assured of receiving official
money and Fed Ex points regardless of what happens after successful completion of the
      first 36 holes of play.

Low-54 qualifiers play the 3rd round.   Those who are among the Low-72 but are not among
the Low-54 will receive appropriate official money and Fed Ex points.

If any Low-54 qualifier can not either start or finish the 3rd round regardless of reason,
then their status will be reverted back that of Low-72, and such players will receive
appropriate official money and Fed Ex points.

Proposed alternative 54-hole cut method ... Low-36 and ties

Low-36 qualifiers play the 4th round.   Those who are among the Low-54 but are not among
the Low-36 will receive appropriate official money and Fed Ex points.

If any Low-36 qualifier can not either start or finish the 4th round regardless of reason,
then their status will be reverted back that of Low-54, and such players will receive
appropriate official money and Fed Ex points.

All Low-36 qualifiers who successfully complete the 4th round will receive appropriate
official money and Fed Ex points.
