For 2012, an alternative points distribution method, which offers a total of 65,000 pts, calculated,
approved and announced on the Monday before play in the Tour Championship begins, is as follows .... 1.. 10,400 6.. 2,600 11.. 1,950 16.. 1,404 21.. 1,274 26.. 1,144 2.. 5,720 7.. 2,470 12.. 1,820 17.. 1,378 22.. 1,248 27.. 1,118 3.. 4,160 8.. 2,340 13.. 1,690 18.. 1,352 23.. 1,222 28.. 1,092 4.. 3,380 9.. 2,210 14.. 1,560 19.. 1,326 24.. 1,196 29.. 1,066 5.. 2,860 10.. 2,080 15.. 1,430 20.. 1,300 25.. 1,170 30.. 1,040With the alternative points distribution in effect, a few of the potential scenarios it creates are as follows .... »» Players #1 thru #8 ........ JUST WIN, BABY! »» Players #9 thru #23 Combination of winning Tour Championship (10,400 pts) -AND- Rory McIlroy finishing no better than a two-way tie for 2nd (4,940 pts) »» Players #24 thru #30 Combination of winning Tour Championship (10,400 pts) -AND- Rory McIlroy finishing no better than solo 3rd (4,160 pts)
The customized alternative Tour Championship points makes the 2012 Fed Ex Cup winning scenarios less complex and
easier to understand. Also, a sense of real urgency to play as well as one can rather than just coasting along is created, especially for the leading players who, in the right scenario, can easily be surpassed by any player in the field. Now, on to the actual 2012 Tour Championship results, which will include the alternative points distribution and the various potential scenarios which have been created by such points. One can compare and contrast both Tour Championship reset and non-reset scores, as well as the final "actual" and "alternative" Fed Ex Cup standings. |

3 .. The 2012 Tour Championship:
Actual results, plus alternative points
Rory McIlroy, the #1 points leader (normal, non-reset), could not seize the moment in the final round, finishing well out of the Top Five for the tournament, and so the "X Chase" became wide open for everyone else. #5 Brandt Snedeker, largely aided by a 3rd round 64, scored a 3-stroke victory, winning both the tournament and the Fed Ex Cup. 4 .. Final 2012 Fed Ex Cup Top 30 Standings -- Actual and Alternative
Justin Rose's dramatic rise in the final 2012 standings -- from #24 (before the Tour Championship) to #6 in actual mode, to #3 in alternative mode -- is, apart from Brandt Snedeker's winning both the Tour Championship and the FedX Cup, the most notable happening of this year's finale. After Snedeker and Rose, there were the rises of Luke Donald (from #9 actual, to #5 alternative) and Bubba Watson. Bubba, who started at #11, moved down to #13 in actual mode, but moved up to #7 in alternative mode.
