2 .. Pre-2012 Tour Championship:   Actual and Alternative Fed Ex Cup Points

The actual points distribution used (a total of 13,590 pts) for the 2012 Tour Championship was as follows ....
     1.. 2,500 6.. 500 11.. 350 16.. 275 21.. 250 26.. 225
     2.. 1,500 7.. 450 12.. 325 17.. 270 22.. 245 27.. 220
     3.. 1,000 8.. 425 13.. 300 18.. 265 23.. 240 28.. 215
     4.. 750 9.. 400 14.. 285 19.. 260 24.. 235 29.. 210
     5.. 550 10.. 375 15.. 280 20.. 255 25.. 230 30.. 205
For 2012, an alternative points distribution method, which offers a total of 60,000 pts, calculated,
approved and announced on the Monday before play in the Tour Championship begins, is as follows ....
     1.. 10,000 6.. 2,400 11.. 1,560 16.. 1,360 21.. 1,180 26.. 1,080
     2.. 5,500 7.. 2,100 12.. 1,520 17.. 1,320 22.. 1,160 27.. 1,060
     3.. 4,200 8.. 1,800 13.. 1,480 18.. 1,280 23.. 1,140 28.. 1,040
     4.. 3,200 9.. 1,700 14.. 1,440 19.. 1,240 24.. 1,120 29.. 1,020
     5.. 2,800 10.. 1,600 15.. 1,400 20.. 1,200 25.. 1,100 30.. 1,000
With the alternative points distribution in effect, a few of the potential scenarios it creates are as follows ....

»» Players #1 thru #7 ........ JUST WIN, BABY!

»» Players #8 thru #29
Combination of winning Tour Championship (10,000 pts)
    -AND-
Rory McIlroy finishing no better than solo 3rd (4,200 pts)

»» Player #30, Scott Piercy
If Piercy wins the Tour Championship (10,000 pts)
    -AND-
Rory McIlroy finishes right at solo 3rd (4,200 pts)

    -THEN-
Both players would be -TIED- for first in the Fed Ex Cup standings with identical 11,499-point totals.
This scenario would necessitate a three-hole aggregate score playoff for the 2012 Fed Ex Cup title.

If both players are tied after three holes, then the play-off becomes sudden-death, continuing on
until one player is able to win a hole outright.

    -OTHERWISE-
A better McIlroy finish gives him the Fed Ex Cup title, while a worse finish for
McIlroy would give Piercy the Fed Ex Cup title.

The customized alternative Tour Championship points makes the 2012 Fed Ex Cup winning scenarios less complex and
easier to understand. Also, a sense of real urgency to play as well as one can rather than just coasting along is created,
especially for the leading players who, in the right scenario, can easily be surpassed by any player in the field.

Now, on to the actual 2012 Tour Championship results, which will include the alternative points distribution and the
various potential scenarios which have been created by such points. One can compare and contrast both Tour
Championship reset and non-reset scores, as well as the final "actual" and "alternative" Fed Ex Cup standings.

3 .. The 2012 Tour Championship: Actual results, plus alternative points

Rory McIlroy, the #1 points leader (normal, non-reset), could not seize the moment in the final round, finishing well
out of the Top Five for the tournament, and so the "X Chase" became wide open for everyone else. #5 Brandt Snedeker,
largely aided by a 3rd round 64, scored a 3-stroke victory, winning both the tournament and the Fed Ex Cup.

4 .. Final 2012 Fed Ex Cup Top 30 Standings -- Actual and Alternative

Justin Rose's dramatic rise in the final 2012 standings -- from #24 (before the Tour Championship) to #6 in actual mode, to #3
in alternative mode -- is, apart from Brandt Snedeker's winning both the Tour Championship and the FedX Cup, the most notable
happening of this year's finale. After Snedeker and Rose, there were the rises of Luke Donald (from #9 actual, to #5 alternative)
and Bubba Watson. Bubba, who started at #11, moved down to #13 in actual mode, but moved up to #7 in alternative mode.
