2 .. Pre-2021 Tour Championship:   Actual and Alternative Fed Ex Cup Points

Because of the reset scoring format being used, there will be no points distribution at the 2021
Tour Championship. Shown below are the reset scores assigned to each of the 30 positions.
     1.. -10 6.. -4 11.. -3 16.. -2 21.. -1 26.. Par
     2.. -8 7.. -4 12.. -3 17.. -2 22.. -1 27.. Par
     3.. -7 8.. -4 13.. -3 18.. -2 23.. -1 28.. Par
     4.. -6 9.. -4 14.. -3 19.. -2 24.. -1 29.. Par
     5.. -5 10.. -4 15.. -3 20.. -2 25.. -1 30.. Par
Now, we will assume that, in our "alternative" scenario, the non-reset points-to-date are being used instead of the
pre-tournament reset scores. On this basis, a calculated total of 30,000 Tour Championship points are approved and
announced on the Monday before the start of the tournament. The complete 30-place distribution is as follows ....
     1.. 5,000 6.. 1,200 11.. 780 16.. 680 21.. 590 26.. 540
     2.. 2,750 7.. 1,050 12.. 760 17.. 660 22.. 580 27.. 530
     3.. 2,100 8.. 900 13.. 740 18.. 640 23.. 570 28.. 520
     4.. 1,600 9.. 850 14.. 720 19.. 620 24.. 560 29.. 510
     5.. 1,400 10.. 800 15.. 700 20.. 600 25.. 550 30.. 500
With the alternative points distribution in effect, a few of the potential scenarios it creates are as follows ....

»» Players #1 thru #12 ........ JUST WIN, BABY!

»» Players #13 thru #20
Combination of winning Tour Championship (5,000 pts)
    -AND-
Patrick Cantlay finishing no better than a two-way tie for 2nd (2,425 pts)

»» Players #21 thru #26
Combination of winning Tour Championship (5,000 pts)
    -AND-
Patrick Cantlay finishing no better than a three-way tie for 2nd (2,150 pts)
or no betther than solo 3rd (2,100 pts)

»» Players #27 thru #30
Combination of winning Tour Championship (5,000 pts)
    -AND-
Patrick Cantlay finishing no better than a two-way tie
    for 3rd (1,850 pts)

    # 27 Eric van Rooyen (1,448 pts) could also claim the Fed Ex Cup by winning
the Tour Championship (5,000 pts), while Patrick Cantlay (4,302 pts) finishes
no better than solo 3rd (2,100 pts).

The customized alternative Tour Championship points makes the 2021 Fed Ex Cup winning scenarios less complex and
easier to understand. Also, a sense of real urgency to play as well as one can rather than just coasting along is created,
especially for the leading players who, in the right scenario, can easily be surpassed by any player in the field.

Now, on to the actual 2021 Tour Championship results, which will include the alternative points distribution and the
various potential scenarios which have been created by such points. One can compare and contrast both Tour
Championship reset and non-reset scores, as well as the final "actual" and "alternative" Fed Ex Cup standings.

3 .. The 2021 Tour Championship .... Part 1 - Actual results

NOTE ..... This section shows the actual final results using the pre-tournament reset scores.

Thanks to the reset score format, it was a tense battle between Patrick Cantlay and Jon Rahm all the way to the last green.
Cantlay survived a near-disasterous bogey on the 17th hole to keep his lead, then hit two great shots into the 18th green,
setting up a two-putt birdie that sealed the victory. The 2021 Fed Ex Championship, again thanks to the reset score format,
belonged to Cantlay. Rahm finished solo 2nd, while Kevin Na was solo 3rd, and Justin Thomas was solo 4th.

Tony Finau, who had been the pre-tourney 2nd place reset score leader (-8 vs Cantlay's -10), could not do better than
even par within the tournament itself. Meanwhile, Daniel Berger, even par pre-tourney, was 8-under-par for the tourney
itself, finishing tied for 11th with Finau and Jason Kokrak.

Brooks Koepka incurred an injury during the 3rd round and had to withdraw from the
tournament. As a result, he finished 30th in the final "actual" Fed Ex Cup standings.

That's the "Actual" story. But if you check out the in-tournament-only 72-holes scores, you'll quickly discover that
the "Alternative" story is very, very different.   To be specific, there is -NO- "Alternative" Tour Champion winner,
and -NO- "Alternative" Fed Ex Champion -- What in the Fork, Knife and Spoon ?? See the next section for the most
amazing, most thrilling non-conclusion of the 2021 "X Chase".

4 .. The 2021 Tour Championship .... Part 2 - Alternative results

In "alternative" mode, with -NO- reset scores used, "actual" mode winner Patrick Cantlay finishes with an in-tournament score
of 269 (11-under-par), three strokes behind Jon Rahm and Kevin Na, who are tied for first place with in-tournament scores of
(14-under-par) each. Naturally, one would assume that a playoff would occur between Rahm and Na for both the "Alternative" Tour
Championship and FedX Cup titles.   But Hold On!   Don't bother staying tuned to NBC, and don't bother switching over to the Golf
Channel. Thanks to the "actual" way the 2021 Tour Championship ended, the "alternative" playoff can't happen -- Ever !!!

As a result of this wonderful turn of events, a few of the final "alternative" 2021 Fed Ex Cup placings are in
limbo, while others are in proper order. We can only speculate as to the final "alternative" outcomes based
on either Kevin Na or Jon Rahm winning a sudden-death playoff. This is done in the next section below.
