All of the 1975 Top 30 Money Winners, plus recent winners of Major Championships and the Players, as well as U.S. members of the most recent Ryder Cup, were required to play. The Designated Event Series was in effect from 1974 to 1978. During this period, the Designated Events were -- In 1974, Colonial Invitational, Kemper Open and World Open at Pinehurst; In 1975, the Atlanta Classic; In 1976 Westchester; In 1977, Pleasant Valley (near Boston); In 1978, IVB-Philadelphia (Whitemarsh CC). For whatever reason the PGA Tour did not include Designated Events in the World Series invitational criteria in 1976, 1977 or 1978. Just imagine if much lesser-known players had won one of these events instead of David Graham (1976-Westchester), Ray Floyd (1977-Pleasant Valley) and Jack Nicklaus (1978-Philadelphia), and had wound up -NOT- qualifying for the World Series of Golf by other means!!! The second of David Graham's two wins was the final edition of the American Golf Classic, played on Firestone's North Course the week before the World Series of Golf. 5 Hubert Green 71 65 73 73 282/2 13,000.00 4-time PGA Tour event winner T6 Lee Trevino 71 70 72 70 283/3 10,250.00 First available not otherwise qualified from Spring Tour segment (2nd place, after Hubert Green) T6 Tom Watson 70 73 70 70 283/3 10,250.00 1975 World Series of Golf winner 8 Al Geiberger 73 67 72 73 285/5 8,000.00 Western Open T9 Takashi Murakami 67 72 70 77 286/6 7,100.00 Japan Order of Merit T9 Jerry Pate 71 72 72 71 286/6 7,100.00 U.S. Open, Canadian Open T9 J.C. Snead 70 71 71 74 286/6 7,100.00 First available not otherwise qualified from Winter Tour segment (5th place, after Johnny Miller, Hale Irwin, Jack Nicklaus and Ben Crenshaw) 12 Bud Allin 70 72 74 71 287/7 6,600.00 First available not otherwise qualified from Summer Tour segment (4th place, after Jerry Pate, David Graham and Al Geiberger) 13 Raymond Floyd 69 69 72 78 288/8 6,400.00 Masters Tournament T14 Billy Dunk 75 71 73 73 292/12 6,100.00 Australian Order of Merit T14 Don January 77 73 71 71 292/12 6,100.00 2-time PGA Tour event winner January's first win was the 1975 Texas Open. His 2nd win was the 1976 Tournament of Champions, an event which in those days might have almost been mentioned as being on the same level with the Western Open and Canadian Open. But the World Series' invitational criteria did not treat the "T of C" as a special event. Any T of C winner would have to earn a Firestone South ticket by other means. T16 Ben Crenshaw 78 71 74 70 293/13 5,700.00 2-time PGA Tour event winner T16 Johnny Miller 76 76 70 71 293/13 5,700.00 The Open Championship, 1975 World Cup Individual winner 18 Sheng-San Hsu 72 73 77 75 297/17 5,400.00 Asian Order of Merit 19 Dave Stockton 73 77 76 77 303/23 5,200.00 PGA Championship 20 Allan Henning 73 76 77 78 304/24 5,000.00 South African Order of Merit NOTE: The British PGA Tour was not represented. Neil Coles had won the Order of Merit, but did not travel to America because of a fear of flying. The European PGA Tour was still in its infancy at the time, and Seve Ballesteros was just beginning his dominance of the circuit. However, no provision for Continental Europe was made for in the World Series qualifications. 1975 U.S. Amateur winner Fred Ridley and 1976 British Amateur winner Dick Siderowf each chose to decline their invitations and play in the 1976 U.S. Amateur, which was contested the same week as the 1976 World Series of Golf. |
