A run-off between Wilson and T. Roosevelt would have been held on Tuesday December 17th, 1912, with the winner to be inaugurated on March 4th, 1913. Travel conditions and communications standards of the day dictate a six-week gap between the initial election and the run-off. Because of how close Wilson was to the need-to-win mark (3,698 pts short) -AND- because of how Roosevelt stood points-wise vs.Wilson, the chances of a run-off win were quite unlikely. Roosevelt therefore would had have the option of voluntarily conceding the race to Wilson, thereby canceling the run-off. If such a concession was declared, Wilson would have been given 3,708 of Roosevelt's points and be certified as the 1912 election winner (75,020 to 34,338). ** NOTE ** --- In actual fact, Woodrow Wilson was the outright winner of the 1912 election. II. Debs - The Forgotten 1912 Candidate With the main focus of the election of 1912 on Woodrow Wilson, Theodore Roosevelt and William Taft, Socialist candidate Eugene V. Debs was only a mere footnote. However, the Electoral Points system allows Debs' 4th place performance to be seen in a different light. Debs' total of 8,073 points is the best-ever for a 4th place finisher in any election from 1900 to the present. The next closest 4th place total is a mere 1,356 points, achieved by Evan McMullin in the 2016 election. Debs' 8,073 points would have exceeded any earned by third place finishers in all but six elections from 1900 to the present. He had better than ten percent of the 1912 popular vote in seven states, better than eight or nine percent in eight other states. Debs' best states were Nevada, where he earned 16.47% of the popular vote, and Oklahoma, 16.42%. The remaining two electors were pledged to Democratic candidate Woodrow Wilson. Wilson's total of 435 Electoral Votes marked the first and only time that a Presidential candidate received as many as Electoral Votes as there are seats in the U.S. House of Representatives. |
