    Top | Winter | Spring | Summer

Segment Champs | 75-76 Totals | 1976 World Series of Golf

1975-1976 Top PGA Tour Winners and Non-Winners, with total of Top-10 points
earned during the period between the 1975 and 1976 World Series of Golf.

NOTE: In parenthesis next to points totals is the overall rank in Top-10
points earned between the 1975 and 1976 World Series of Golf
(only the earners of 100-or-more points are so numbered.)

     1. Special Event Winners (may have also won other events)

Jack Nicklaus ....... (413.29)(3) Players Championship
Al Geiberger ........ (360.09)(6) Western Open
Johnny Miller ....... (334.67)(7) The Open Championship,
                                          1975 World Cup Individual Champion

Jerry Pate .......... (286.55)(8) U.S. Open, Canadian Open
Raymond Floyd ....... (247.34)(14) Masters Tournament
Dave Stockton ....... (146.67)(33) PGA Championship

NOTE: If the current Tour Championship event employed total Top-10
finish points earned as the sole prime qualification method,
with the cut-off set at the 30th list position (as is done
in the current format), then major and important tournament
winners such as 1976 PGA Championship winner Dave Stockton
would not qualify for the Tour Championship.

     2. 2-or-more PGA Tour event winners

        Hubert Green ........ (489.50)(1) 4-time winner
        Ben Crenshaw ........ (478.31)(2) 2-time winner
        Hale Irwin .......... (407.84)(4) 2-time winner
        Don January.......... (378.43)(5) 2-time winner
        Dave Hill ........... (268.17)(10) 2-time winner
        David Graham ........ (265.50)(11) 2-time winner

     3. PGA Tour single event winners

        J.C. Snead (281.42)(9) Lee Elder (184.96)(22)
Lee Trevino (251.84)(12) Gibby Gilbert (175.01)(23)
Rik Massengale (241.13)(15) Larry Ziegler (157.63)(25)
Mark Hayes (211.44)(16) John Lister (147.77)(31)
Roger Maltbie (211.25)(17) Bob Wynn (142.93)(34)
Bob Gilder (204.34)(19) Joe Inman (129.00)(35)
Bud Allin (196.84)(20) Gary Koch (100.00)(41)
        Tom Kite (192.80)(21)

     4. Non-event winners, 100-or-more Top-10 points earned

Tom Weiskopf (251.30)(13) Jerry McGee (149.56)(30)

Mike Morley (157.92)(24) Larry Nelson (122.84)(36)
Lou Graham (156.75)(26) Charles Coody (122.61)(37)
John Mahaffey (156.42)(27) George Burns (114.93)(38)
Don Bies (152.50)(28) Gil Morgan (108.48)(39)
Miller Barber (151.47)(29) Billy Casper (106.63)(40)

NOTE: Tom Weiskopf led all players in this particular classification
during the 1975-76 "wrap" period. However, no invitational
category was in effect for players such as him to qualify for
              the World Series of Golf.

If the World Series of Golf's defending champion invitational
category had not been in effect (see further down this page),
then 1975 World Series of Golf winner Tom Watson would also,
like Weiskopf, not have qualified for the 1976 World Series.

     5. Some other notable non-event winners

Victor Regalado (99.01) Bruce Lietzke (75.69)

How player qualified for the 1976 World Series of Golf

      1 Jack Nicklaus 68 70 69 68 275/-5 100,000.00
         Players Championship

      2 Hale Irwin 71 70 71 67 279/-1 50,000.00
         2-time PGA Tour event winner

      3 Dave Hill 67 70 73 70 280/E 20,000.00
         2-time PGA Tour event winner

      4 David Graham 70 71 71 69 281/1 15,000.00
         2-time PGA Tour event winner

The first of Graham's two wins was the Westchester Classic, played
the week after the 1976 Open Championship as a "Designated Event".
All the 1975 Top 30 Money Winners, plus recent winners of Major
Championships and the Players, as well as U.S. members of the most
recent Ryder Cup, were required to play.

The "Designated Event" experiment was in effect from 1974 to 1978.
During this period, the Designated Events were -- In 1974, Colonial
Invitational, Kemper Open and World Open at Pinehurst; In 1975, the
Atlanta Classic; In 1976 Westchester; In 1977, Pleasant Valley (near
Boston); In 1978, IVB-Philadelphia (Whitemarsh CC).

For whatever reason (perhaps no good reason), the PGA Tour did not
include Designated Events in the World Series invitational criteria
in 1976, 1977 or 1978. Just imagine if much lesser-known players had
won one of these "Designated Events" instead of David Graham (1976-
Westchester), Ray Floyd (1977-Pleasant Valley) and Jack Nicklaus
(1978-Philadelphia), and had wound up -NOT- qualifying for the World
Series of Golf by other means!!!

The second of David Graham's two wins was the final edition of the
American Golf Classic, played on Firestone's North Course the week
before the World Series of Golf.

(5th place, after Johnny Miller, Hale Irwin, Jack Nicklaus and
          Ben Crenshaw)

     12 Bud Allin 70 72 74 71 287/7 6,600.00
First available not otherwise qualified from Summer Tour segment
(4th place, after Jerry Pate, David Graham and Al Geiberger)

     13 Raymond Floyd 69 69 72 78 288/8 6,400.00
         Masters Tournament

    T14 Billy Dunk 75 71 73 73 292/12 6,100.00
         Australian Order of Merit

    T14 Don January 77 73 71 71 292/12 6,100.00
         2-time PGA Tour event winner

January's first win was the 1975 Texas Open. His 2nd win was the
1976 Tournament of Champions, an event which in those days might
have almost been mentioned as being on the same level with the
Western Open and Canadian Open. But the World Series' invitational
criteria did not treat the "T of C" as a special event. Any T of C
winner would have to earn a Firestone South ticket by other means.

    T16 Ben Crenshaw 78 71 74 70 293/13 5,700.00
         2-time PGA Tour event winner

    T16 Johnny Miller 76 76 70 71 293/13 5,700.00
The Open Championship, 1975 World Cup Individual winner

     18 Sheng-San Hsu 72 73 77 75 297/17 5,400.00
         Asian Order of Merit

     19 Dave Stockton 73 77 76 77 303/23 5,200.00
         PGA Championship

     20 Allan Henning 73 76 77 78 304/24 5,000.00
         South African Order of Merit

NOTE: The British PGA Tour was not represented. Neil Coles had won the
Order of Merit, but did not travel to America because of a fear
          of flying.

The European PGA Tour was still in its infancy at the time, and
Seve Ballesteros was just beginning his dominance of the circuit.
However, no provision for Continental Europe was made for in the
          World Series qualifications.

1975 U.S. Amateur winner Fred Ridley and 1976 British Amateur winner
Dick Siderowf each chose to decline their invitations and play in the
1976 U.S. Amateur, which was contested the same week as the 1976 World
          Series of Golf.

Bonus ... A never-used modified points scale - Go Back -

It has been commented a time or two in this article that no additional
finish points beyond 10th place were offered by the PGA Tour.

So, in response, we present an unused, modified version of the 1975-76 finish
points scale. If it had been used, any professionals finishing among the Top 50
and ties would have been guaranteed to receive at least one point.

400-plus points total, awarded to professionals only

  1st - 100 6th - 16 11th - 9 16th thru 20th ..... 4 pts each
  2nd - 57 7th - 14 12th - 8 21st thru 25th ..... 3 pts "
  3rd - 36 8th - 12 13th - 7 26th thru 30th ..... 2 pts "
  4th - 24 9th - 11 14th - 6 31st thru 50th, .... 1 point each
  5th - 20 10th - 10 15th - 5 plus any ties among Top-50 finishers

Example .. 1975 Southern Open, Top 50 plus ties finishers for 72 holes
